I had such a hard time deciding between the Historical City Walking Tour and the Market Walking Tour, ultimately deciding on the historical tour. About a week before, Ivanna reached out to ask if I was okay to start the tour earlier due to the forecast of extreme heat and combining the historical and market tours. I was so happy to say yes because it gave me the best of both worlds! Ivanna was friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly thoughtful. She sent a Google Maps pin for the meeting point, used a small picture book to help us visualize what Aix en Provence looked like in the past, and even included a fun trivia game in the cathedral. She answered all of my questions and shared recommendations for places to eat and explore. When another tour I had booked was canceled because of the heat, I ended up booking a train to Avignon. When she found out, she took the time to suggest what I should see there too. Our walking tour ended with a Polaroid photo at the Rotonde Fountain, which was such a thoughtful and personal souvenir she gave us with. I highly recommend Ivanna and would happily book another tour with her if I am ever back in Aix en Provence!

Ivanna was a wonderful guide for our visit to Aix-en-Provence. She was very knowledgeable and effective at pointing out details that I’m sure we would have missed without her. We would recommend her to anyone visiting this region of France.

This tour was fantastic. Although my husband and I had already spent a few days wandering around Aix En Provence, we couldn't put the fountains and beautiful architecture into context. Then the area came alive for us as Ivanna guided us through the same areas, giving us the history as well as many interesting anecdotes about the area and its inhabitants. The time flew by, and we agree that we were extremely fortunate to have gotten Ivanna as our guide.

why is this tour different

You Won't Find This Anywhere Else

This tour isn’t about chasing views — it’s about absorbing a way of life.

What makes it different:

  • Small groups for easy wandering and flexibility

  • Time in villages, not just photo stops

  • Local produce & real encounters

  • A relaxed rhythm, true to the Luberon

You’ll taste Provence, talk to people, and feel the countryside — not just look at it.

Your guide isn’t just trained in history—their family has lived in Provence for 200+ years. You’ll hear stories about the resistance during WWII, meet locals who’ve known your guide since childhood, and discover hidden spots that aren’t in any guidebook because they’re family secrets. This isn’t a script. It’s personal

Your Itinerary

Your Day in the Luberon

L'Ilse-Sur-la-Sorgue
Gordes
Rousillon
Aix en Provence

Pick up and Drop Off from Aix en Provence

9:00 AM - Hotel Pickup in Aix-en-Provence

We collect you from your hotel or accommodation in central Aix. Settle into our comfortable, air-conditioned van as your guide shares what makes today special—and answers any questions about the rest of your Provence trip.

Driving time to L’isle: 60 minutes through olive groves and sunflower fields

10:15 AM - L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue — Water, Markets & Provençal Life

Next, we head deeper into the Luberon to reach Gordes.

Gordes is one of the most iconic villages in France — and for good reason.

Perched dramatically above the valley, it offers:

  • Spectacular panoramic views

  • Beautiful stone streets to explore

  • Time for ice cream, a coffee, or a glass of wine

You can see all the way across Provence — on clear days, even toward the Camargue National Park.

We also talk about Gordes’ powerful role in the French Resistance during World War II, adding depth to its postcard beauty.

12:00 PM - Gordes — The Iconic Hilltop Village

Next, the historic village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, nestled beneath the dramatic limestone peaks of the Alpilles Mountains. This is where Van Gogh spent one transformative year and created some of his most celebrated works.

What You’ll Experience:

Van Gogh’s Asylum (Saint-Paul-de-Mausole)

  • Walk the serene monastery gardens where Van Gogh painted 150+ works during his stay
  • Stand in the exact field he saw from his window—the inspiration for The Starry Night
  • See interpretive panels placing his paintings side-by-side with the real landscapes
  • Learn the moving story of his recovery through art (1889-1890)
  • Visit his recreated bedroom (the same view that inspired multiple paintings)

Glanum Roman Ruins

  • Explore this 2,500-year-old Celtic-Roman settlement (optional entry: €9)
  • See the sacred spring still flowing after millennia
  • Walk streets where Romans shopped and worshipped
  • One of France’s most impressive archaeological sites outside the major cities

Alpilles Natural Beauty

  • Stroll beneath ancient plane trees lining Saint-Rémy’s boulevards
  • Understand why this unique light attracted Van Gogh and countless artists
  • See the landscapes that appear in dozens of his paintings

💡 Pro Tip: Wednesday is Saint-Rémy’s legendary Provençal market—200+ stalls selling everything from lavender soap to fresh goat cheese. If you’re touring on Wednesday, we can arrive early to experience the market bustle before crowds peak.

Time in Saint-Rémy: 1.5 hours

1:30 PM - Lunch Break in Les Baux-de-Provence

Time to refuel! Your guide will recommend three lunch options in Les Baux based on your preferences and budget.

Lunch Options (your choice, not included in tour price):

  • Quick & Casual: Gourmet sandwiches with local ingredients (€15-20)
  • Provençal Bistro: Traditional ratatouille, lamb daube, rosé wine (€25-35)
  • Fine Dining: Michelin-quality cuisine with valley views (€40-60)

Your guide knows which family-run places locals eat at versus tourist traps. They’ll make reservations if needed and give you space to enjoy your meal at your own pace.

Lunch duration: 1-1.5 hours (flexible based on your preference)

3:00 PM - Roussillon — The Ochre Cliffs of Provence

We finish in Roussillon, home to the famous ochre cliffs — often called the Colorado of Provence.

Here, nature takes over.

Red, orange, and golden earth carved into dramatic shapes. Walking paths through colour. A completely different Provence — wild, raw, and unforgettable.

On the return journey, there’s also the option to stop at a local goat cheese farm, tasting one of Provence’s most beloved traditions straight from the source.

Then we return to Aix-en-Provence, relaxed and well-fed — in every sense.
