Art and Wine in Provence — Painters Paint, Drinkers drink

Cézanne painted this mountain more than eighty times and never felt he’d finished with it. He’d walk out from Aix with his kit on his back, sit down in front of it, and try again.

That’s the day. A morning in the old town where he grew up, an afternoon in front of the mountain with a brush in your hand, and a glass of what the slopes below it produce. You don’t need to be able to paint. Nobody’s marking it.

The Itinerary

what the day will look like

10:00 AM - Meet Aix-en-Provence

We start where he started. Cézanne was born here, went to school here, and spent his life leaving and coming back.

We walk the old town at an unhurried pace — the Cours Mirabeau, the fountains, the carriage doors of the Mazarin quarter, the café where he argued with Zola until they stopped speaking. Not a march past monuments. A morning that gives you the city the rest of your trip will make more sense against.

About 2.5 hours on foot, flat, with shade and stops.

1:00 PM — Lunch, and an hour that's yours

We break for lunch in town. It isn’t included, and that’s deliberate — you eat what you want at the price you want, and we’ll book the table in advance so it’s waiting.

If you’d rather we join you, we will. If you’d rather have the hour to yourselves, we’ll see you after.

2:30 PM — The Atelier des Lauves

A short ride north of the centre to the studio Cézanne built for himself in 1902 and worked in until he died.

It’s small, and it’s been left almost exactly as it was. His coat on the hook. The skulls and the plaster cupid from the still lifes, on the shelf where he put them. The tall north window he cut into the wall for the light.

Most people go quiet in here.

4:30 PM - Art and Wine

We finish at a local working estate on the slopes below the mountain, with the winemaker or a member of the family.

Rosé, whites and reds, it’s a good hour. Throw in some goats cheese for good measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour right for you?

This Tour Is For:

People who dont paint

Most guests haven’t held a brush since school. That’s the normal case, not the exception. There’s no critique and no comparing.

Anniversaries, birthdays, retirements. You go home with an object from the day rather than a camera roll.

If you’ve already had the lavender-and-hilltop-village day, this is the other kind. One mountain, properly.

A working estate, someone from the family pouring, and a reason to be there beyond buying a case.

This Tour Is Not For:

Large Groups

Not ideal for groups over 8 people.

Not ideal for travelers requiring full wheelchair access.

No. Most guests have never painted. You’re shown Cézanne’s method and then left to it, and nobody assesses the result.

The painting moves indoors.

Yes. Canvas, and the materials are included.

Comfortable shoes, and something you don’t mind getting paint on.

This runs on request rather than a fixed schedule, so as early as you can — especially September and October.

I had such a hard time deciding between the Historical City Walking Tour and the Market Walking Tour, ultimately deciding on the historical tour. About a week before, Ivanna reached out to ask if I was okay to start the tour earlier due to the forecast of extreme heat and combining the historical and market tours. I was so happy to say yes because it gave me the best of both worlds! Ivanna was friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly thoughtful. She sent a Google Maps pin for the meeting point, used a small picture book to help us visualize what Aix en Provence looked like in the past, and even included a fun trivia game in the cathedral. She answered all of my questions and shared recommendations for places to eat and explore. When another tour I had booked was canceled because of the heat, I ended up booking a train to Avignon. When she found out, she took the time to suggest what I should see there too. Our walking tour ended with a Polaroid photo at the Rotonde Fountain, which was such a thoughtful and personal souvenir she gave us with. I highly recommend Ivanna and would happily book another tour with her if I am ever back in Aix en Provence!

Ivanna was a wonderful guide for our visit to Aix-en-Provence. She was very knowledgeable and effective at pointing out details that I’m sure we would have missed without her. We would recommend her to anyone visiting this region of France.

This tour was fantastic. Although my husband and I had already spent a few days wandering around Aix En Provence, we couldn't put the fountains and beautiful architecture into context. Then the area came alive for us as Ivanna guided us through the same areas, giving us the history as well as many interesting anecdotes about the area and its inhabitants. The time flew by, and we agree that we were extremely fortunate to have gotten Ivanna as our guide.
